In detail
A butter bell holds butter packed into an inverted lid that sits in a little water. The water seals it from air, so butter keeps at room temperature for weeks instead of going rancid in days — which means spreadable butter without the fridge and without leaving it out to spoil.
Vitrified stoneware, so the water cup does not stain or absorb. Takes two hundred and fifty grams. Change the water every three days and it will hold in a normal kitchen; in a hot kitchen it holds for about a week. Dishwasher safe. It is a two-hundred-year-old idea and it still works better than a covered dish.
The one limitation worth stating: no ceramic body survives a jump from freezer to hot oven, and this one is no exception. Everything here is oven-safe from cold and freezer-safe on its own; it is the transition between the two that cracks a glaze, and no vitrification prevents it.
