A stone or ceramic coaster with no backing does two things wrong: it lifts with the glass and it grinds the table. Nine millimetres of cork on the underside stops the second, and a cork face on the upper side stops the first.
Six coasters, a hundred millimetres across, with a stoneware core for weight and cork on both faces. Heavy enough to stay put, soft enough to be silent. Wipe only — cork and dishwashers are a short relationship.
The one limitation worth stating: no ceramic body survives a jump from freezer to hot oven, and this one is no exception. Everything here is oven-safe from cold and freezer-safe on its own; it is the transition between the two that cracks a glaze, and no vitrification prevents it.
Why this one. Water absorption under half a percent is the whole argument. It is a single laboratory number, it is rarely published, and it separates a service that still looks like this in ten years from one that crazes, stains and holds a smell inside twelve months — at the same price, in the same shapes, on the same shelf.
