In detail

A narrow crock tips when the tallest thing in it leans. This one is wide-based at two point two litres, so a full complement of spoons, spatulas and a whisk sits without the whole thing going over when one is pulled out.

Same vitrified stoneware as the tableware, so it does not absorb oil from the utensils and go rancid at the base — which is what happens to unglazed terracotta crocks after a year. Dishwasher safe. Dry it out fully if anything has gone in damp.

What it is not: airtight in the laboratory sense. A domestic gasket keeps coffee fresh for weeks and biscuits crisp for days; it is not a vacuum, and anything that has to be genuinely sealed for months wants a jar and a fridge rather than a worktop container.

Why this one. Storage is judged on the parts nobody photographs: whether the gasket comes out, whether the filter is a standard size, whether the lid vents, whether the footprint uses a shelf or wastes it. Those four things decide whether a container is still in use in three years or in the back of a cupboard.
