In detail

Every sealed jar has a silicone gasket and almost none of them are removable, so after a year there is a black line under the seal that cannot be reached. These lift out with a fingernail and go back in one way round.

Borosilicate bodies at half a litre, one and one and a half, with beech lids and a clamp that holds real pressure. Airtight enough for coffee and flour, which is the actual test — a jar that keeps biscuits crisp is not the same as one that keeps ground coffee from going flat. Dishwasher safe; oil the lids twice a year.

What it is not: airtight in the laboratory sense. A domestic gasket keeps coffee fresh for weeks and biscuits crisp for days; it is not a vacuum, and anything that has to be genuinely sealed for months wants a jar and a fridge rather than a worktop container.
